Sticker campaign, since 2007.
This project was a dedicated campaign that shaped both the visual identity of the streets of Berlin, and also the behaviour of its inhabitants. The pseudo official nature of the stickers that were placed over approximately 10,000 bins throughout the city was an irrepressible mission to quite literally provide recycling for recycling. Instead of the glass and plastic bottles being placed inside trashcans, the skilfully designed pictogram indicated that such behaviour was forbidden, with the desired action being to place them on the ground.
The reasoning behind this was not made immediately clear by the sticker, however, on longer inspection, the result of this was that the homeless of the city would gather these bottles in a more respectable manner than rummaging through the detritus housed in the bins. These bottles provide a regular source of income for many homeless people as they can recycle them for between 8ct to 25ct each. The ecology of this project is core to its success: not only sociologically, but also environmentally. Even the roll of stickers onto which the image was printed was of recycled origin. The majority of people adhering to this instruction to place the bottles next to the bin are blissfully unaware that this was either an artistic intervention, or an unofficial, non-governmental direction.
